Benefits include improved soil fertility when legumes fix nitrogen, better erosion control, higher overall land productivity, and diversification of income. Multicrop systems can suppress pests and weeds and provide continuous ground cover. Drawbacks include greater management complexity, potential competition for light, water, and nutrients, timing constraints for harvest, and higher labor or equipment demands.
