Muistimekanismit refers to the biological and psychological processes that enable the encoding, storage, and retrieval of information. These mechanisms are fundamental to learning, adaptation, and our sense of self.

At a biological level, memory involves changes in the brain, particularly in neurons and their connections. Synaptic plasticity, the ability of synapses to strengthen or weaken over time, is considered a key mechanism. Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) are cellular processes that underlie these synaptic changes, facilitating the formation of lasting memories. Different brain structures play crucial roles; the hippocampus is vital for forming new declarative memories (facts and events), while the amygdala is involved in emotional memories. Procedural memories (skills and habits) are thought to be supported by the basal ganglia and cerebellum.

Psychologically, memory is often conceptualized in terms of different stages and types. The Atkinson-Shiffrin model, for instance, proposes sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory holds information briefly, allowing for initial processing. Short-term memory has a limited capacity and duration, holding information actively in mind. Long-term memory has a vast capacity and can store information for extended periods. Within long-term memory, distinctions are made between explicit (declarative) memory, which can be consciously recalled, and implicit (non-declarative) memory, which influences behavior without conscious awareness. These psychological frameworks help researchers understand how information is processed and retained.
