The mozgatókéregben, or motor cortex, is a region of the cerebral cortex responsible for planning, controlling, and executing voluntary movements. Located in the posterior portion of the frontal lobe, it is further divided into several sub-regions, each with specific roles. The primary motor cortex is the main output area for motor commands, directly influencing the spinal cord to initiate muscle contractions.

Anterior to the primary motor cortex are premotor areas and the supplementary motor area. These areas are involved in the more complex aspects of motor control, including the selection of appropriate movements based on external cues, the sequencing of movements, and the planning of learned motor skills. The premotor cortex is particularly important for visually guided movements, while the supplementary motor area plays a key role in internally generated movements and the coordination of bimanual tasks.

The motor cortex operates in conjunction with other brain regions, such as the basal ganglia and cerebellum, which modulate and refine motor output. Sensory feedback from the body is also crucial, allowing the motor cortex to make real-time adjustments to ongoing movements. Damage to the motor cortex can result in various motor impairments, including paralysis, weakness, and difficulties with coordination and skilled movements.
