Mouthtolung is a term that refers to the act of delivering artificial respiration by blowing air from the rescuer's mouth into the mouth of an individual whose breathing has stopped. This technique is a component of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and is employed when a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally. The primary goal of mouthtolung is to provide oxygen to the victim's lungs and maintain circulation until professional medical help arrives or the person begins to breathe independently.

The procedure typically involves tilting the victim's head back to open the airway, pinching the nose shut, and then creating a seal over the victim's mouth with the rescuer's own mouth. The rescuer then exhales air into the victim's lungs, observing for chest rise as an indication that air is entering. This is usually followed by chest compressions as part of the complete CPR protocol. The frequency and duration of rescue breaths are specified in current CPR guidelines. While mouthtolung was historically a prominent part of CPR training, current recommendations sometimes emphasize compression-only CPR for untrained bystanders in certain situations, though trained rescuers are still taught to administer rescue breaths.
