Mountaintop is the uppermost part of a mountain, commonly referring to the peak or crest that forms the highest point of the landform. Depending on the terrain, a mountaintop may be a sharply defined summit, a broad plateau, or a rocky crown above the surrounding slopes.

Formation: Mountaintops arise from tectonic uplift and volcanic activity, sculpted by erosion, weathering, and, where present, glaciation. The exposed rocks and soils reflect long geological histories; in many ranges the summit surfaces are bare rock or thin soils, with crags and boulder fields.

Climate and ecology: The mountaintop often experiences cooler temperatures and stronger winds than lower elevations. Vegetation changes with altitude; treeline marks a transition to alpine or tundra ecosystems, with specialized plants and animals adapted to harsh conditions. Snow and ice can persist seasonally on higher peaks.

Human use and significance: Mountaintops are destinations for recreation such as hiking, scrambling, and climbing, and host scientific facilities including weather stations and observatories. They also serve as sites for telecommunications and other infrastructure. In many cultures, summits hold symbolic or spiritual significance.

Conservation and threats: Mountaintops can be sensitive to erosion, habitat loss, and climate change. In some regions extractive activities such as mountaintop removal mining have altered or removed mountaintop habitats, prompting environmental and social concerns.
