Moulting, also known as molting or ecdysis, is the process by which an animal sheds its outer layer. This outer layer can be skin, feathers, fur, or an exoskeleton. Moulting is a crucial part of growth and development for many organisms, as it allows them to increase in size or replace damaged or worn-out structures.

In insects and other arthropods, moulting involves shedding the exoskeleton, which is a rigid outer covering. The animal then secretes a new, larger exoskeleton underneath. This process is typically regulated by hormones and occurs multiple times during the organism's life. Between moults, the animal is in a vulnerable state as its new exoskeleton hardens.

Birds and some mammals also moult, shedding feathers or fur respectively. This process often occurs seasonally, allowing animals to adapt to changing environmental conditions, such as winter or breeding seasons. For birds, feather moulting is essential for maintaining flight efficiency and insulation. Mammalian fur moulting helps regulate body temperature and can also be related to camouflage or mating displays.

Reptiles, such as snakes and lizards, shed their skin in a process that can occur in large pieces or small flakes. This allows their bodies to grow and also helps remove parasites. Amphibians, like frogs, also moult their skin, often consuming it afterwards. The frequency and appearance of moulting vary greatly across different species and are influenced by factors such as age, nutrition, and environmental conditions.
