Motorcykel is the term used in Danish (and in some Norwegian contexts) for a two-wheeled motor vehicle designed for road use. A motorcykel typically features an engine, a frame, two wheels, handlebars, and a seat, with a drive system such as a chain, belt, or shaft. Most models are designed for on-road riding, but many variants exist, including sport bikes, cruisers, touring, adventure, dual-sport, and off-road motorcycles. Electric motorcycles, which use electric motors and battery packs, have become an important segment in recent years.

The history of motorcykel traces to late 19th-century experiments with motorized bicycles, with early machines appearing in the 1880s and 1890s. Over the 20th century, mass production and competition spurred rapid advances in chassis design, engine technology, braking, and safety features. Today, major manufacturers around the world produce a wide range of models for commuting, touring, sport, and recreation.

Key design considerations include engine type and displacement, transmission, frame geometry, suspension, brakes, and tires. Modern motorcycles may incorporate rider aids such as traction control, anti-lock braking systems, and selectable riding modes. Safety is a central concern, and many jurisdictions require a license, vehicle registration, and helmet or eye protection for riders.

Motorcycles offer advantages in agility, fuel efficiency, and access to congested areas, but they also carry inherent risks. Proper training, protective gear, and adherence to traffic laws are essential for safe riding.
