Moppeja is a small locality located within the region of Lapland in northern Finland. The settlement lies approximately 25 kilometres southeast of the municipal centre of Rovaniemi and is characterized by dense boreal forest, numerous lakes, and a network of gravel roads that provide access to the surrounding areas. The area is primarily residential and agricultural, hosting several family farms that produce dairy cattle and reindeer herding. The local economy benefits from small-scale forestry operations and seasonal tourism, particularly in the summer months when visitors come to experience the unique Arctic landscape.

Historically, Moppeja was established in the late 19th century as a logging outpost, taking advantage of the rich timber resources found in the surrounding pine forests. Over time the community expanded, bolstered by a modest population that peaked in the 1950s. The Rovaniemi Municipal Merger of 2007 incorporated Moppeja into the Rovaniemi administrative boundaries, ensuring that residents have access to municipal services such as education, healthcare and community planning.

The locality observes the same cultural traditions common to Lapland, including the celebration of Lappish holidays and the use of the Northern Sami language among its older inhabitants. The climate is subarctic with long, cold winters and short, mild summers, which influences agricultural cycles and local architecture. Despite its small size, Moppeja maintains a distinct local identity reflected in community festivals and the preservation of traditional building styles.
