Montarmontar's name likely combines elements from the region's historic language meaning "mount" and "watcher" or "guardian," though the origin is uncertain. Early maps from the 19th century mention Montarmontar without explanation. Local folklore often personifies the peak as a sentinel overseeing the valleys, though such stories are part of tradition rather than scholarship.

The peak is primarily granitic with metamorphic seams, shaped by Alpine glaciation. The climate is alpine: cool summers, long snow seasons, and fierce winds at the summit.
