Monodonta is a genus of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs. These snails are commonly known as "top snails" due to the generally conical shape of their shells. They belong to the family Trochidae, which is a diverse group of marine snails characterized by their trochiform (top-shaped) shells.

The shells of Monodonta are typically thick and robust, often exhibiting a spiral sculpture. A distinctive feature of many species within this genus is the presence of a single, tooth-like projection on the inner lip of the aperture (the opening of the shell). This characteristic gives the genus its name, derived from the Greek words "monos" (single) and "odous" (tooth). The color of the shells can vary, often showing patterns of green, brown, or purple, and they can be quite iridescent on the inside.

Monodonta species are primarily found in shallow marine environments, inhabiting rocky shores, tide pools, and coral reefs. They are herbivorous, feeding on algae and other marine plant matter that grows on submerged surfaces. Their grazing activities play a role in controlling algal growth in their habitats. These snails are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical waters, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Common examples include Monodonta labio, found in the Indo-Pacific, and Monodonta articulata. They are often observed in large numbers during low tide.
