Monyism is a philosophical concept that posits the existence of only one fundamental substance or principle. This single underlying reality is the basis for all phenomena in the universe. Monistic viewpoints stand in contrast to dualism, which proposes two fundamental substances, and pluralism, which suggests multiple independent substances.

Within monism, there are various interpretations. Materialistic monism, for instance, argues that matter is the sole fundamental substance. Everything, including consciousness and mental states, is ultimately reducible to physical processes. Idealistic monism, conversely, asserts that mind or spirit is the fundamental reality, and the physical world is a manifestation or product of this consciousness. Neutral monism suggests that there is a single substance that is neither purely mental nor purely physical, but rather some underlying neutral ground from which both mental and physical aspects arise.

Historically, monistic ideas can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophers like Thales, who proposed water as the primordial substance, and Parmenides, who argued for a single, unchanging, and indivisible reality. Later philosophers, such as Baruch Spinoza, also developed influential monistic systems, famously proposing God or Nature as the singular substance with infinite attributes. The concept continues to be a subject of debate in metaphysics, touching upon questions of the nature of reality, consciousness, and the relationship between mind and body.
