Monilähetinjärjestelmä, or the mononeuronal leishmaniasis, is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Leishmania monocytogenes. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of a female sand fly, typically of the genus Phlebotomus. The disease primarily affects the skin and mucous membranes, causing the formation of moniliform (corkscrew-shaped) ulcers on the nose, ears, and mouth.

The clinical presentation of monilähetinjärjestelmä varies but commonly includes the following symptoms: initial pruritus (itching) at the bite site, followed by the development of a papule (small raised area) that evolves into a moniliform ulcer. These ulcers can be painful and may leave scars upon healing. In some cases, the infection may spread to internal organs, leading to more severe symptoms such as fever, weight loss, and hepatosplenomegaly (enlargement of the liver and spleen).

Diagnosis of monilähetinjärjestelmä typically involves microscopic examination of tissue samples from the ulcers, which may reveal the presence of amastigotes, the parasitic form of Leishmania. Serological tests, such as the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT), can also be used to detect antibodies against Leishmania.

Treatment of monilähetinjärjestelmä usually involves a combination of drugs, including pentavalent antimonials (such as meglumine antimoniate) and amphotericin B. Supportive care, such as wound management and nutritional support, is also essential. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes and preventing complications.
