Monikollineariteetti, often translated as multicollinearity, refers to a phenomenon in statistical modeling, particularly in regression analysis, where two or more predictor variables in a model are highly correlated with each other. This means that one predictor variable can be linearly predicted from the others with a substantial degree of accuracy. While not a violation of the assumptions of ordinary least squares (OLS) regression, severe multicollinearity can cause problems for the interpretation and reliability of the model's coefficients.

When multicollinearity is present, the standard errors of the regression coefficients tend to increase. This makes the estimates of the coefficients less precise, leading to wider confidence intervals and a reduced ability to determine which predictor variables are statistically significant. It can also make the coefficient estimates unstable, meaning that small changes in the data or the model specification can lead to large changes in the estimated coefficients.

Detecting multicollinearity typically involves examining correlation matrices between predictor variables, calculating variance inflation factors (VIFs), or employing condition indices. High VIF values or large condition indices suggest the presence of multicollinearity.

Addressing multicollinearity can involve several strategies. These include removing one or more of the highly correlated predictor variables, combining correlated variables into an index, using principal component regression, or employing ridge regression. The choice of method depends on the specific context of the analysis and the goals of the model. In some cases, if the primary goal is prediction rather than interpretation of individual coefficients, multicollinearity might be less of a concern.
