Moneta is a term with historical and geographic usages. In antiquity, moneta was the Latin word for money or coinage. It is best known as the epithet of the goddess Juno, Juno Moneta, whose temple on the Capitoline Hill housed the Roman mint. Coins minted there contributed to the association between Moneta and coinage, and the term moneta became the source of the word money in Latin and, through later linguistic development, in many modern languages. The English word money derives from moneta via medieval Latin and Old French monete.
