Here, "hogy el fog jönni" (that he would come) is a subordinate clause dependent on the main clause "Azt mondta" (He said). Another type of subordination is seen in relative clauses: "A könyv, amit olvastam, nagyon érdekes volt" (The book that I read was very interesting). The clause "amit olvastam" (that I read) modifies "A könyv" (The book).
