molübdeenit

Molübdeenit is the mineral commonly known as molybdenite, with the chemical formula MoS2. It is a sulfide mineral and the principal ore of molybdenum. The mineral crystallizes in the hexagonal system and features a layered, sheet-like structure that yields its characteristic softness and lubricating properties.

Physically, Molübdeenit occurs as lead-gray to silvery-gray masses with a metallic luster and a greasy feel. On the Mohs scale it grades around 1 to 2. It has perfect basal cleavage and a relatively low specific gravity of about 4.65 to 4.80.

Occurrence and geology: Molübdeenit forms in hydrothermal veins associated with quartz and sulfide minerals and also occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks. It is widely distributed worldwide and is mined primarily for molybdenum production.

Uses and significance: The ore is processed to obtain molybdenum metal, which is used to strengthen steel and in high-temperature alloys. It is also employed as a dry lubricant and as a catalyst in petrochemical processes.

Etymology and nomenclature: The name molybd- derives from Greek molybdos meaning lead; the -ite suffix denotes a mineral. Molübdeenit is a spelling variant in some languages for molybdenite.
