Moisture detection refers to techniques and instruments used to determine the presence, amount, or distribution of water in a material or environment. It encompasses measurements of moisture content (often expressed as percent by weight) and relative humidity, which describes water vapor in air. The two concepts are related but distinct: moisture content relates to a solid or liquid, while relative humidity pertains to the ambient gas phase.

Common sensing approaches include contact sensors that probe a material directly and non-contact methods that infer moisture from emitted or reflected energy. Capacitive and resistive sensors are widely used for in-situ moisture measurements. Capacitive sensors detect changes in the dielectric constant as water content varies, while resistive or impedance-based sensors monitor changes in electrical conductivity. Optical methods, such as near-infrared and infrared thermography, estimate surface moisture from spectral or thermal signatures. Microwave and RF sensors can assess bulk moisture in bulk materials or grains. Gravimetric methods provide high accuracy in laboratory settings but are typically not used for real-time monitoring. Temperature compensation and calibration are important for accuracy, as moisture readings are affected by temperature and material properties.

Applications span multiple sectors. In agriculture, soil moisture sensors optimize irrigation. In construction and woodworking, moisture content informs drying and durability decisions. Food and beverage industries monitor moisture to maintain quality and shelf life. Packaging, electronics, and petrochemical processes use moisture detection to prevent spoilage, corrosion, or product defects.

Limitations include sensor drift, hysteresis, response time, and the need for proper placement and calibration. Advances focus on multi-parameter sensing, non-contact techniques, and robust data processing for real-time monitoring.
