Moistureblocking is the practice of preventing moisture from entering or migrating through materials and assemblies. It combines barrier technologies, seals, coatings, and sometimes desiccants to limit moisture diffusion, capillary action, and condensation. The goal is to reduce risks such as corrosion, mold growth, material degradation, electrical failure, and product spoilage.

Moisture blocking works by creating physical barriers to vapor flow, reducing moisture movement, and sometimes absorbing residual moisture. Common approaches include barrier layers such as polymer films or metal foils, and multilayer laminates that provide low water vapor transmission rates. Protective coatings—epoxy, polyurethane, or silicone—can render surfaces hydrophobic or impervious. Vapor retarders slow moisture diffusion in building envelopes, while seals and gaskets prevent entry at joints and openings. Desiccants may be used to absorb moisture within enclosures, and in more complex assemblies, drainage paths and hermetic sealing can be employed to manage moisture risk over time.

Applications of moistureblocking span several sectors. In construction, it is used in walls, roofs, and foundations to control indoor humidity and prevent structural damage. In packaging, moisture barriers protect moisture-sensitive products such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food. Electronics and electrical enclosures use conformal coatings, potting compounds, and hermetic seals to guard against condensation. Cable and fiber optic assemblies employ moisture-blocking gels, seals, or desiccants to prevent water ingress that could impair performance. Automotive and industrial equipment also rely on moistureblocking to extend service life.

Design considerations include climate, humidity, temperature range, diffusion path length, and material compatibility. Barrier performance is often described by permeance or water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and by durability under aging and chemical exposure.
