The word "moiré" itself comes from French, referring to a type of watered silk fabric that exhibits a similar wavy or rippled appearance.

The creation of moiré patterns is based on the principle of interference. When two sets of lines or dots are superimposed, slight misalignments or differences in spacing can cause constructive and destructive interference of the visual information. This results in the appearance of new, often more prominent, lines or shapes that seem to undulate or shimmer. The size and complexity of the moiré pattern depend on the spacing and orientation of the original patterns.

Moiré patterns can be observed in a variety of contexts. In everyday life, they can appear when photographing finely patterned fabrics or screens, or even when looking at certain digital images displayed on a screen. In science and engineering, moiré patterns are sometimes intentionally used as a measurement tool. For example, in moiré interferometry, precise measurements of displacement or strain can be made by observing the moiré fringes generated when two gratings are overlaid.
