Modulasjonspedaler are effects pedals used with electric guitars, basses, and other instruments to alter the signal by modulating parameters over time. They add movement, width, or color to the tone by periodically varying delay, pitch, amplitude, or timbre.

Common types include chorus, flanger, phaser, tremolo, vibrato, rotary speaker emulation, and ring modulation. Chorus and flanger mix the dry signal with a swept delayed copy; phaser and tremolo modulate phase or amplitude; vibrato modulates pitch; rotary effects imitate a moving speaker. Ring modulation creates metallic tones.

How they work: An LFO generates a low-frequency signal that drives the modulation. In delay-based devices the LFO modulates delay time; in phasers and filters it modulates phase or cutoff; in tremolo and vibrato it modulates amplitude or pitch. Typical controls include rate, depth, feedback, and mix; some models add stereo outputs, tap tempo, expression inputs, or true bypass.

History and usage: Modulation effects gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, with analog devices built around bucket-brigade delay lines. Today, pedals range from vintage replicas to digital algorithms and are used across rock, pop, funk, ambient, and experimental music to create space and movement.

Considerations: Choose based on desired sound and budget. Analog circuits offer warmth but may require maintenance; digital models offer versatility. Factors include input/output impedance, power requirements, bypass topology, and how pedal placement affects tone and noise.
