Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became a prominent leader in the civil rights movement during the mid-20th century. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, King was a Baptist minister and a leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. King's most famous speech, "I Have a Dream," was delivered on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, where he called for an end to racial segregation. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his nonviolent struggle against racial injustice. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, while supporting a sanitation workers' strike. King's legacy continues to inspire movements for social justice and human rights around the world.
