Myokard is the muscular tissue that forms the walls of the heart. It is one of three types of muscle tissue in the body, the other two being skeletal muscle and smooth muscle. Myokard is unique in that it is involuntary, meaning it contracts and relaxes without conscious control. It is also striated, meaning it has a striped appearance under a microscope, similar to skeletal muscle. This striation is due to the arrangement of contractile proteins within the muscle cells.

The primary function of myokard is to pump blood throughout the body. This is achieved through a coordinated series of contractions and relaxations that create pressure gradients, propelling blood from one chamber of the heart to the next and then out to the circulatory system. The rate and strength of these contractions are regulated by the heart's electrical conduction system and can be influenced by hormones and the autonomic nervous system. Myokard cells are highly specialized, with a high density of mitochondria to provide the energy needed for continuous work. They are also connected by intercalated discs, which allow for rapid electrical signal transmission and synchronized contraction of the entire heart muscle. Damage to the myokard, such as from a heart attack, can impair its ability to pump effectively and lead to serious health problems.
