Mitmetuumalõlitus refers to a condition affecting the white matter of the brain, characterized by the presence of multiple lesions or areas of damage. These lesions are typically identified through neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The term literally translates from Estonian as "multi-core inflammation" or "multi-center inflammation," hinting at the scattered nature of the affected areas.

The underlying causes of mitmetuumalõlitus can vary widely. It is often associated with demyelinating diseases, where the myelin sheath, the protective covering around nerve fibers, is damaged. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prominent example of a condition that can manifest as mitmetuumalõlitus.
