Mineral crystals are solid materials that have a highly ordered, repeating arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules. This internal structure gives rise to distinct external geometric shapes, known as crystal forms. The science of studying minerals and their crystals is called mineralogy.

The formation of mineral crystals typically occurs during geological processes such as cooling of magma, precipitation from solutions, or metamorphosis of existing rocks. The specific chemical composition of a mineral and the conditions under which it forms influence the type of crystal structure it develops. For example, the mineral quartz, with the chemical formula SiO2, commonly forms hexagonal prisms. Diamond and graphite are allotropes of carbon, meaning they have the same chemical composition but different crystal structures, leading to vastly different properties.

The external shape of a mineral crystal is a manifestation of its internal atomic arrangement. These shapes are often described by geometric terms like cubes, prisms, pyramids, and rhombohedrons. While ideal crystal shapes may form in open spaces, most mineral crystals grow in contact with other minerals, resulting in imperfect or modified external forms. However, the angles between the crystal faces remain constant for a given mineral, a principle known as the law of constancy of interfacial angles. Mineral crystals are fundamental to understanding the Earth's composition and geological history.
