milligrammen

Milligrammen, in English commonly referred to as milligrams, is a unit of mass in the metric system. The symbol is mg. A milligram equals one thousandth of a gram (10^-3 g) or 1e-6 kilograms. It is a derived unit, with the kilogram as the base unit for mass in the International System of Units (SI).

Use and applications

The milligram is used to measure very small masses where grams would be too large for practical purposes. It is widely employed in medicine and pharmacology for dosages, in nutrition labeling for vitamins and minerals, and in chemistry and biology for small samples or reagent quantities. In practical terms, common medication doses and supplement amounts are often stated in milligrams.

Key conversions include: 1 mg = 0.001 g; 1 g = 1000 mg; 1 kg = 1,000,000 mg. An important relation is 1 mg = 1000 micrograms (µg). Because milligrams measure mass, conversions to volume (for liquids or solids not having a standard density) require density information; otherwise mass-to-volume conversions are not direct.
