Miljöberättande, often translated as environmental storytelling, is a narrative technique used in video games and other interactive media to convey information about the game's world, characters, and plot through the environment itself rather than explicit exposition. This method relies on visual cues, level design, item placement, and subtle details to allow players to piece together the story and lore at their own pace.

Instead of relying heavily on cutscenes or lengthy dialogue, environmental storytelling encourages players to explore and observe their surroundings. The state of a room, the objects left behind, graffiti on walls, or the architecture of a building can all contribute to the narrative. For example, a ransacked apartment might suggest a recent struggle, while a shrine adorned with flowers could hint at a character's devotion or a past tragedy.

This approach fosters a deeper sense of immersion and player agency, as the act of discovery becomes an integral part of the storytelling experience. Players are encouraged to become detectives within the game world, actively interpreting the environment to understand its history and present condition. It can also be used to subtly introduce themes, foreshadow events, or build atmosphere.
