Environmental friendliness is typically assessed through criteria such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water efficiency, sustainable or recycled materials, waste reduction, durability, and the potential for reuse or recycling. In consumer and business contexts, the label is often supported by lifecycle thinking, quantified with life cycle assessment (LCA) and verified by independent ecolabels or certifications.

In Norway and the broader Nordic region, several labels signal environmental performance. The Nordic Swan ecolabel (Svanen) and Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) are commonly used, while the EU Ecolabel (EU-Blomsten) and other certifications like FSC and PEFC for forest-based products are also encountered. Buildings can be rated by energy and ecological standards (e.g., green building certifications) to qualify as miljøvenlige. In practice, markets and regulation influence how the term is applied, and consumer interpretations can vary.

Limitations and caveats: "Miljøvenlige" is context-dependent; a product may be environmentally friendly in one aspect but not in others. Greenwashing is a risk when claims are vague or unverified, so independent labels and transparent life cycle data are important.
