mikafungin
Mikafungin, also spelled micafungin, is an antifungal medication in the echinocandin class. It is a semisynthetic lipopeptide that inhibits the enzyme β-(1,3)-D-glucan synthase, which is essential for fungal cell wall synthesis. By blocking glucan production, mikafungin weakens the cell wall and is broadly fungicidal against most Candida species and active against several molds, while not typically the agent of choice for invasive aspergillosis.
It is approved for the treatment of esophageal candidiasis and for candidemia and invasive candidiasis, and
Mikafungin is administered by intravenous infusion once daily. Dosing depends on indication and patient factors, with
Common adverse events are generally mild and may include fever, nausea, rash, and histamine-mediated infusion reactions.
Mikafungin is marketed under the brand name Mycamine in many countries and was developed initially by Fujisawa
