The midclavicular line, or midklavikulærlinjen in Norwegian, is an anatomical landmark used in physical examinations, particularly in the chest. It is an imaginary vertical line that runs down the body from the midpoint of the clavicle, also known as the collarbone. Specifically, it extends directly downward from the middle of the clavicle.

This line serves as a crucial reference point for locating various thoracic structures. It is frequently used to identify the location of the heart's apex beat, which is often found near the intersection of the midclavicular line and the fifth intercostal space. Furthermore, the midclavicular line is employed to demarcate the boundaries of the lungs and the liver during physical assessment. For instance, the liver's upper border can be estimated by palpating upwards along this line.
