Middelstrømningens is a Danish term used in fluid dynamics to denote the mean flow of a fluid, i.e., the portion of a flow that remains after subtracting short-term fluctuations. In English contexts this is typically referred to as the mean flow or the time-averaged velocity field. The possessive form middelstrømningens is used when discussing properties that belong to or are described relative to the mean flow.

The mean velocity field, often denoted ū(x, t), can be defined as a time average over a suitably long interval: ū(x) = (1/T) ∫0^T u(x, t) dt for stationary processes, or as an ensemble average over realizations. The instantaneous velocity can be written as u = ū + u', where u' is the fluctuating component with zero mean. Similar decompositions apply to pressure, temperature, and other scalar fields. This separation underpins the theoretical and computational analysis of many fluid problems.

In fluid dynamics, the averaged equations describe the mean flow but introduce additional terms, known as Reynolds stresses, which represent momentum transfer due to velocity fluctuations. Handling these stresses is a central challenge in turbulence modeling and often requires closure models, such as those used in Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS).

Applications of middelstrømningens concepts span engineering and science. They are used to analyze drag, heat and mass transfer, mixing, and transport in pipes, ducts, rivers, and atmospheric and industrial flows.
