A microwell is a small, individual receptacle used in various scientific and technological applications. These wells are typically found on specialized plates, often referred to as microwell plates or multi-well plates, which come in a range of formats, such as 6, 12, 24, 48, 96, 384, or even 1536 wells. The size and volume of liquid each microwell can hold vary depending on the plate format, ranging from milliliters to nanoliters.

Microwells are commonly employed in biological research, diagnostics, and drug discovery. They facilitate high-throughput screening, where numerous experiments or assays can be performed simultaneously on a single plate. This miniaturization of experiments reduces reagent consumption, lowers costs, and increases efficiency. Applications include cell culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), protein quantification, and drug screening.

The materials used for microwell plates typically include polystyrene, polypropylene, or cyclic olefin copolymer, chosen for their optical clarity, chemical inertness, and low binding properties. Surface treatments can be applied to the microwells to enhance cell adhesion, protein binding, or to create specific surface chemistries for particular applications.
