Microtextural refers to the small-scale texture of a material as revealed by microscopic examination. It describes how individual crystals, grains, subgrains, and phases are arranged and oriented on the micrometer to submicrometer scale, including grain boundaries, twins, exsolution lamellae, and defect structures. Microtexture complements macroscopic texture by documenting crystallographic orientations and internal deformation features that influence a material’s properties.

In geology and mineralogy, microtextural analysis helps interpret a rock’s deformation history and metamorphic conditions. Features such as deformation twins in calcite, subgrain networks in quartz, sutured grain boundaries, and exsolution lamellae reveal strain, cooling rates, and chemical interactions at small scales.

In materials science and metallurgy, microtexture refers to the distribution of crystallographic orientations within a polycrystal at the microscale. It affects anisotropy in strength, hardness, wear, and fatigue resistance and evolves during plastic deformation, recrystallization, annealing, and phase transformations.

Common methods for studying microtexture include polarized light microscopy for qualitative features, scanning electron microscopy with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) for quantitative orientation mapping, and transmission electron microscopy for defect structures. Data are often analyzed with orientation distribution functions or qualitative texture components to summarize the microtextural state.
