Microbialplants is a term used to describe systems in which microbial life forms establish close associations with plants to enhance traits, or where microbial metabolic pathways are integrated with plant biology. The concept encompasses natural plant–microbe symbioses as well as engineered partnerships in which microbes are designed or selected to support plant performance.

In natural settings, microbes colonize roots, stems, leaves, and internal tissues. Rhizobia fix atmospheric nitrogen in legume nodules; arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improve nutrient uptake; and various endophytic bacteria and fungi can promote growth, enhance tolerance to drought or disease, and influence plant development. Microbial activities in the rhizosphere and within plant tissues can transform soil nutrients, produce protective metabolites, and modulate hormone signaling, contributing to plant fitness.

Engineered microbialplants refer to efforts that deliberately combine plant hosts with microbial partners to deliver specific functions. Approaches include introducing beneficial microbes that fix nitrogen or solubilize phosphorus to crop roots, assembling endophyte consortia that express protective or growth-promoting compounds, and designing synthetic symbioses in which microbial partners supply essential metabolites or signals to the plant. Techniques draw on microbiology, plant genetics, and synthetic biology, including genome editing and circuit design.

Applications span sustainable agriculture, where reduced fertilizer inputs and greater stress resilience are desired; bioremediation of polluted soils; and production of plant-derived compounds through plant–microbe systems. Development challenges include ecological safety, stability and specificity of associations, potential gene flow, regulatory compliance, and public acceptance. The field intersects with plant–microbe interactions, endophyte research, and synthetic biology, while emphasizing purposeful integration of microbial functions with plant hosts.
