Metonímiai is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated. This association is not based on similarity, as in a metaphor, but rather on a contiguous or causal relationship. Essentially, it's a substitution of a name for an attribute, a cause for an effect, a container for the content, or a symbol for the thing symbolized.

There are several common types of metonymy. One frequent example is when a producer is named for the product, such as "reading Shakespeare" meaning reading Shakespeare's plays. Another is when a place is named for a person, like "the White House announced" referring to the administration of the US president. The container can also stand for the content, as in "the kettle is boiling," where the kettle itself is not boiling but the water inside it is. Similarly, an effect can be named for its cause, or an instrument for the agent. For instance, "the pen is mightier than the sword" uses "pen" to represent writing and "sword" to represent military force.

Metonymy is widely used in everyday language and literature to create more vivid imagery, conciseness, and emphasis. It relies on the audience's understanding of the implicit connection between the substituted word and the intended meaning. This figure of speech enriches communication by allowing for indirect reference and a more nuanced expression of ideas.
