metisiline

Metisiline is a synthetic penicillinase-resistant penicillin antibiotic. It is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic effective against Gram-positive bacteria, particularly those that produce penicillinase. Metisiline functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.

Metisiline is administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Its pharmacokinetic properties include relatively rapid absorption and distribution throughout the body, with a half-life of approximately 30 to 60 minutes. It is primarily excreted by the kidneys.

The primary indication for metisiline is the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus. This includes conditions such as skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and endocarditis. It is not effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) due to acquired resistance mechanisms.

Adverse effects associated with metisiline are generally similar to other penicillins and can include hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, urticaria, and anaphylaxis. Gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea and vomiting may also occur. Renal and hepatic toxicity are rare but possible.

Metisiline is considered a valuable antibiotic for specific staphylococcal infections. However, its use has been limited by the emergence of MRSA, necessitating the use of alternative agents for infections caused by resistant strains. Careful consideration of bacterial susceptibility is crucial when selecting an antibiotic for staphylococcal infections.
