Methosulfates are salts or esters of methanesulfonic acid. Methanesulfonic acid is a strong organic acid with the chemical formula CH3SO3H. When it loses a proton, it forms the methanesulfonate anion, CH3SO3-. Methosulfates can exist as ionic compounds, where the methanesulfonate anion is paired with a metal cation like sodium or potassium, or they can be esters, where the hydrogen atom of the hydroxyl group in methanesulfonic acid is replaced by an organic group.
