Methanolgebruik refers to the use of methanol, also known as methyl alcohol or wood alcohol. Methanol is the simplest alcohol and is a colorless, volatile, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor. It is a key industrial chemical and a versatile solvent.

Industrially, methanol is a primary feedstock for the production of other chemicals, most notably formaldehyde, which is used in the manufacturing of plastics, resins, and adhesives. It can also be used directly as a fuel in specially designed internal combustion engines or in fuel cells to generate electricity. This application is being explored for vehicles and as a source of clean energy, particularly in regions where it can be produced from renewable sources like biomass or captured carbon dioxide.

However, methanol is also highly toxic. Ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption can lead to serious health consequences, including blindness, organ damage, and death. Due to its toxicity, strict safety precautions are necessary when handling and storing methanol. Its flammability also requires careful management to prevent fires. The industrial and fuel-related applications of methanol are therefore subject to rigorous safety regulations.
