Methanisering is a process used in the treatment of wastewater and sewage sludge to produce biogas, primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide. This process is a form of anaerobic digestion, where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. The primary goal of methanisering is to reduce the volume of sewage sludge and produce a renewable energy source in the form of biogas.

The process begins with the collection of wastewater or sewage sludge, which is then fed into an anaerobic digester. Within this digester, microorganisms such as bacteria and archaea work together to convert the organic matter into biogas and a residual product known as digestate. The biogas produced is primarily composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), with trace amounts of other gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and ammonia (NH3).

Methanisering is an environmentally friendly process as it reduces the amount of organic waste that would otherwise end up in landfills, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
