Methakrylaatit, commonly known as methacrylates, are a group of organic compounds characterized by the presence of a methacrylate functional group. This group consists of a vinyl group attached to a carbonyl group, which is further attached to an oxygen atom. The general chemical formula for a methacrylate ester is CH2=C(CH3)COOR, where R represents an alkyl or aryl group. This structural feature, particularly the double bond, makes methacrylates highly reactive monomers capable of undergoing polymerization.

The most well-known methacrylate is methyl methacrylate (MMA), a key component in the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), widely recognized by trade names such as Plexiglas and Lucite. PMMA is a transparent thermoplastic often used as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass in applications like windows, signage, and protective shields. Other methacrylates, with different R groups, are polymerized to create a diverse range of materials with varying properties, including coatings, adhesives, sealants, and impact modifiers for plastics. The versatility of methacrylates stems from their ability to be polymerized individually or copolymerized with other monomers, allowing for fine-tuning of material characteristics such as hardness, flexibility, and chemical resistance.
