Meteropname is the process of recording the consumption shown by a metering device to determine charges for a customer. It is typically conducted by the energy supplier or an authorized meter operator, and can involve a physical on-site reading or a data retrieval from a remotely connected device such as a smart meter. The primary purpose is to obtain an accurate measurement of usage for billing, verification, and recordkeeping.

The term applies to various meters, most commonly electricity (measured in kilowatt-hours) and natural gas (measured in cubic meters), but it can also cover water meters in some contexts. Meteropname occurs in several situations, including when a customer starts or changes supply contracts, after meter replacement or relocation, and at regular intervals for billing. It may also be requested if a customer reports a suspected reading error or if remote data is unavailable or incomplete.

During the opname, the reader records details such as the meter’s serial number, meter type, the displayed reading, the unit, and the date and time of the reading. The result is compared with previous readings to identify discrepancies, and notes on meter condition or installation safety may be added. If the meter cannot be read, an estimated reading or a follow-up visit may be scheduled.

Data from the opname is entered into billing and customer information systems to calculate charges and maintain consumption histories. With the growth of smart meters, some opnames are performed remotely, but on-site verification remains common for validation, inspections, or disputes and tampering checks.
