Metal Selection is a process used in various industrial and manufacturing applications to separate metal particles or particles of interest from a mixture of materials, often reducing impurities and contaminates. This process usually involves employing various physical properties including density, size, shape, magnetic response, and even electrical properties to separate the particles.

There are several methods of metal selection used in processes such as foundry, recycling, and waste management, besides industrial research and materials science. A sample method may include flotation, where a targeted metal is first coated with a suitable reagent that prolongs the floatation half-life, thereby provoking a repulsive force by an air jet that rises through a liquid otherwise heavier than the suspended particle.

Another method is eddy current inspection and separations sensors, which is a non-contact, non-destructive, active method used to detect variations in material of variable composition and internal structure of materials by transmit a high-frequency magnetic field into the surface of a particular object; eddy currents will be generated which sinks into the surface of the object and results in an impedance.

Magnetic separation is a method used for extracting metals via magnetism, this method is widely used in separation of metal from the head of metal scraps in the Recycling of metals. However, it is less effective for separation of less magnetic metals.

In some industrial settings, area density is registered and measured at regular intervals as a metal-rich particle or pellet eventuates downward through a lock flushing phase to divide during processing i.e. specifically at the steel mill.
