Metadataen is a conceptual standard for wrapping metadata about digital objects in a single exchangeable envelope. The term envisions a universal container that can hold descriptive, administrative, technical, and provenance metadata while remaining compatible with existing schemas such as Dublin Core, PREMIS, and schema.org. The goal is to improve interoperability across repositories, libraries, museums, and archives by reducing schema-to-schema translation.

Core design: The envelope includes a lightweight header with an object identifier, type, version, and timestamp, and a payload area that can incorporate multiple metadata blocks. Each block may reference a schema by namespace and carry mapped metadata to a common core. The framework defines a simple mapping layer to translate between blocks and legacy schemas, plus a validation profile (e.g., SHACL or JSON Schema) to ensure consistency. Serialization options include JSON-LD, RDF, and XML.

History and governance: Metadataen emerged in draft form in the early 2020s within an international community of librarians, archivists, and data scientists. A registry of accepted schemas and mapping profiles underpins the ecosystem, with ongoing development and compatibility tests conducted by the International Metadataen Consortium.

Usage and applicability: The standard targets digital libraries, museums, archives, and research data repositories. It supports asset discovery, rights management, provenance tracking, and audit trails by consolidating metadata into a single envelope while preserving schema-specific semantics.

Limitations: Adoption requires tooling and governance for schema mappings; overhead may increase metadata size and processing time; success depends on active community governance to mitigate drift.
