Mesons are elementary particles consisting of a quark and an antiquark bound together by the strong force. They are bosons with integral spin and therefore can be produced and annihilated in pairs. The term “meson system” refers to collections of such mesons that are studied together to understand the dynamics of the strong interaction and the spectrum of hadronic states.

Meson systems are classified according to their total spin (J), parity (P) and charge–parity (C) quantum numbers. The lowest‑lying families are the pseudoscalar mesons (J^PC = 0^−+) such as the π, K and η, and the vector mesons (1^−−) such as the ρ, K and φ. Above these, higher spin multiplets such as the axial‑vector (1^++), tensor (2^++), and hybrid states appear. Lattice QCD and effective field theories predict the masses and decay patterns of these families, and experimental data from e^+e^− colliders, fixed‑target experiments and hadron colliders confirm the spectra while revealing discrepancies that point to exotic configurations.

The study of meson systems is essential for testing quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Meson–meson interactions provide insight into meson exchange forces in nuclei, while multi‑meson states may reveal tetraquarks, pentaquarks, or glueballs—states where gluons play a leading role. Searches for these exotic systems involve measuring invariant mass distributions, partial‑wave analyses, and branching ratios.

Ongoing experiments at facilities such as BESIII, LHCb, and PANDA aim to map the meson spectrum with higher precision, search for missing states, and clarify the nature of recently observed resonances. These efforts deepen our understanding of confinement and the non‑perturbative regime of QCD.
