Merkitysteoriat, or theories of meaning, explore how words, sentences, and other linguistic expressions come to have the meanings they do. These theories are a central topic in the philosophy of language and linguistics. One prominent approach is referential theory, which posits that the meaning of a word or expression is the object or concept it refers to in the world. For example, the meaning of "cat" is the actual animal. However, this theory faces challenges with abstract concepts or non-existent entities.

Another significant perspective is the use theory, famously associated with Ludwig Wittgenstein. This view suggests that the meaning of a word is determined by its use in language. Instead of a fixed referent, the meaning is found in how people employ words in various contexts and language games. This allows for a more flexible understanding of meaning, accommodating nuances and context-dependent interpretations.

Cognitive theories, emerging from cognitive science and linguistics, view meaning as rooted in human conceptualization and mental representations. They explore how meaning is constructed through cognitive processes, including categorization, metaphor, and mental imagery. These diverse theories offer different lenses through which to understand the complex phenomenon of linguistic meaning.
