Merkaptany, also known as thiols, are a class of organosulfur compounds with the general formula R-SH, where R is an alkyl or aryl group and SH is the sulfhydryl functional group. They are characterized by a distinctive, often unpleasant odor, which is why they are sometimes referred to as "sulfur analogs of alcohols." This strong odor is a notable property, and even at very low concentrations, it can be detected by the human nose.

Merkaptany are found naturally in various biological sources, including volcanic gases, crude oil, and as metabolic byproducts in living organisms. Industrially, they are synthesized through several methods, commonly involving the reaction of an alkyl halide with hydrogen sulfide or a hydrosulfide salt. Their chemical properties are similar to alcohols, undergoing reactions such as oxidation and esterification.

Due to their characteristic smell, low molecular weight merkaptans like ethanethiol are deliberately added to natural gas. Natural gas itself is odorless, and the addition of merkaptans serves as a crucial safety measure, allowing leaks to be easily detected. Higher molecular weight merkaptans have applications as polymerization initiators, antioxidants, and in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and pesticides. Some merkaptans also play roles in biological processes, such as in the active sites of certain enzymes.
