Merceriseeritud refers to a cotton fabric or yarn that has undergone a mercerization process. This process involves treating cotton under tension with a strong alkaline solution, typically sodium hydroxide, followed by rinsing. The primary effect of mercerization is to alter the physical structure of the cotton fibers.

Before mercerization, cotton fibers are typically flat and twisted, giving them a somewhat dull appearance. The alkaline treatment causes the fibers to swell and straighten, becoming more cylindrical. This change in shape increases the fiber's luster, making it appear more shiny and silk-like. Additionally, the mercerization process improves the cotton's affinity for dyes, resulting in deeper, more vibrant, and more permanent colors.
