Menntun refers to the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes and values through formal education, as well as through non-formal and informal learning. It encompasses institutions, programs and practices that develop a person’s intellectual and social capabilities across life. In Icelandic usage, the term can describe both the education system and the act of educating.

Iceland’s education system is structured in stages. Early childhood education and care (leikskóli) prepares children for compulsory schooling. Compulsory grunnskóli (primary and lower secondary) runs roughly from age 6 to 16. After grunnskóli, students may attend framhaldsskóli (upper secondary), typically for ages 16 to 19. Higher education is provided by háskólar (universities) and other higher education institutions, including universities of applied sciences. The University of Iceland, founded in 1911, is the oldest and largest institution.

Public policy governs education in Iceland, with nationwide standards and funding, and municipalities responsible for local delivery of services. Education is publicly funded and largely free at the primary, lower secondary and, increasingly, higher education levels. The system emphasizes inclusive education, equality of opportunity, and lifelong learning. Teacher qualifications are regulated, and ongoing professional development is encouraged.

Beyond formal schooling, adult education and continuing learning are supported through various programs, often in partnership with community colleges and cultural institutions. Iceland’s emphasis on literacy, citizen education and digital skills underpins its approach to menntun, and the country regularly integrates education policy with cultural and labor market objectives.
