Memory resident refers to a type of software or application that loads into a computer's memory (RAM) and remains there continuously while the system is running. Unlike other programs that may load and run temporarily before exiting, memory resident applications persist in memory and typically continue to run in the background even after the user navigates away or closes other applications.

Memory resident programs often provide services or functions that are essential to the normal operation of the computer, such as disk formatting tools, system monitoring utilities, or anti-virus software. They can be used by the operating system or other applications, and may also receive regular updates or notifications from the system.

Memory resident applications can be designed to run in one of two modes: Resident or Secondary Memory Resident. In the Resident mode, the program retains a presence in memory at all times, regardless of other factors such as the system's idle state. In the Secondary Memory Resident mode, the program remains in memory, but can be swapped out or closed in favor of more critical system resources.

Memory resident software can have performance implications on the system, as it consumes system resources (such as memory and processing power) even when not actively used. As a result, many operating systems and SYS administrators implement memory limits or resource allocation strategies to ensure that memory resident programs do not overwhelm the system.
