Membránt is a term used in a limited set of scholarly and speculative writings to denote a membrane-like boundary or film whose permeability can be altered by external cues. It is not a single, universally accepted concept, but rather a label applied in different contexts to discuss membrane behavior that goes beyond classical models of semipermeable lipid bilayers.

In biology, membránt has been used to describe hypothetical adaptive membranes in origin-of-life discussions or protocell models. Proponents imagine boundaries that can adjust pore size, composition, or charge in response to environmental signals, thereby regulating fluxes of ions and organic molecules without de novo membrane synthesis. The term is not widely adopted in mainstream cell biology and remains largely theoretical.

In materials science, membránt appears as a proposed category of stimuli-responsive, membrane-like films. Such materials would derive from polymers or composites whose porosity, selectivity, or hydrophilicity can be tuned by electric fields, pH, temperature, or chemical triggers. Potential applications include selective separations, sensors, and controlled release systems.

Etymology and usage: membránt combines the root membrane with an adjectival suffix to indicate a property-bearing material or boundary. The acute diacritic on the final vowel is a stylistic choice in some texts to mark emphasis or linguistic origin, not a standard in any discipline.
