Membransbarriären, often translated as membrane barrier, refers to the selective permeability of cell membranes. This property is crucial for maintaining the integrity and function of cells by controlling the passage of substances into and out of the cell. The cell membrane, primarily composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, acts as a dynamic barrier.

The phospholipid bilayer itself is inherently semipermeable, allowing small, nonpolar molecules like oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through freely via diffusion. However, it largely prevents the passage of polar molecules and ions, such as glucose, amino acids, and sodium ions. This is where membrane proteins play a vital role.

Transport proteins, including channels and carriers, facilitate the movement of specific substances across the membrane. Channel proteins form pores that allow certain ions or small molecules to pass through rapidly. Carrier proteins, on the other hand, bind to specific molecules and undergo conformational changes to transport them across the membrane. This selective transport can be passive, moving substances down their concentration gradient, or active, requiring energy to move substances against their concentration gradient.

The membransbarriären is essential for numerous cellular processes, including nutrient uptake, waste removal, maintaining ion gradients necessary for nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction, and regulating cell volume.
